First Nations Christians: Building Faith, Leadership, and Legacy
ABM Auxiliary Speech, Sydney, NSW – Aunty Rev’d Gloria Shipp’s Walkabout Ministry
Larissa shared on “I am an Everlasting Daisy,” a reflection on the resilience and beauty of First Nations Christians. Drawing on the Indigenous belief that “we walk backwards into the future,” she spoke of carrying faith, ancestors, and community into the journey ahead. She reminded listeners that injustice often robs people of flourishing—but through Christ, we find access, peace, and steadfast hope. Like the Everlasting Daisy, when rooted in God’s love, our faith endures, and our beauty and resilience does not fade.
Celebration of Rev’d Lorryanne Smith’s Ordination –NQ Diocese
The North Queensland Diocese continues to strengthen its Indigenous ministries and legacy. We celebrated the ordination of Rev’d Lorryanne Smith, daughter of Bishop James and Aunty Lala Leftwich, surrounded by her church family from St Luke’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anglican Ministry in Cairns. We give thanks for this milestone and pray that all Indigenous ministries within our Anglican dioceses continue to flourish and grow.
NATSIAC Gathering 2025 – Cairns, QLD
The annual gathering of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anglican Council brought together representatives from dioceses across Australia. Each member shared updates on their local ministries and the work happening within their dioceses. We were also joined by representatives from the Standing Committee of the General Synod, who offered valuable insight and support for the ongoing development NATSIAC. We invite you to continue praying for NATSIAC as we discern and shape future ministries. May we remain faithful to the work God has called us to do in serving and strengthening our communities.
The Bishop Arthur Malcolm First Nations Endowment Fund – Sydney, NSW
We give thanks to St James’ King Street Anglican Church, Sydney, for partnering with ABM and NATSIAC to launch the Bishop Arthur Malcolm First Nations Bishops’ Endowment Fund. Named in honour of Australia’s first Aboriginal Bishop, this fund will strengthen and sustain First Nations leadership within the Anglican Church. It will support the ministry of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander bishops, nurture emerging leaders, and uphold culturally grounded theology shaped by First Nations’ wisdom.
At the launch, Bishop Malcolm’s grandson, Patrick Yeatman, reflected on his grandfather’s legacy of evangelism and leadership, reminding us that the Church’s future depends on walking together in faith, truth, and hope. We were blessed to attend an Evensong at St James King Street as a part of the celebration of the partnership
