Sri Lanka Floods
Emergency Appeal

Deadly flooding has struck Sri Lanka, leaving communities devastated. Our partners on the ground are providing urgent support to affected families.

Responding to the devastating floods in Sri Lanka

Last Updated: 3 December 2025

A state of emergency has been declared in Sri Lanka as the country reels from one of the worst flood disasters in two decades.

According to ABC News, at least 465 people have been killed, with over 200,000 people forced into emergency shelters as the country grapples with the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.

Our partner in Sri Lanka, the Church of Ceylon, has called for urgent assistance. Both the Diocese of Colombo and the Diocese of Kurunagala have been affected.

ABM AID are in close communication with our partner on the ground as an emergency response is developed.

“Many of our families are displaced, living in temporary shelters, and facing severe difficulties,” reports Rt. Revd. Nishantha Fernando, Bishop of Kurunagala. “With the support of partners such as ABM AID, we hope to respond swiftly and bring comfort, dignity, and meaningful relief to those who are suffering.”

An initial Emergency Response is planned to reach approximately 250 families with:

FOOD AND WATER: Rice, emergency rations, clean drinking water

SHELTER: Tarpaulin, blanket, rope and repair kit

HYGIENE KITS: Soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sanitary pads, hand sanitiser and towel

The cost per family to provide this Emergency Care is: $212

Church workers and volunteers will also provide special assistance to elderly persons, children and the vulnerable through parish networks.

We invite you to give what you can to assist the Church in Ceylon, as they respond to the immediate needs of the people.

Here is what your donation can do:

$22 can supply a family with a Hygiene Kit (Soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sanitary pads, hand sanitiser and towel)

$88 can provide Emergency Food Rations for a family for two weeks

$212 can supply food, emergency shelter and a Hygiene Kit to a family

$500 helps provide the Emergency Care needed most urgently

Please give what you can as we hold all those affected in our prayers.

Sri Lanka Floods Emergency Appeal

PRAYER

God is our refuge and our strength. An ever-present help in times of trouble. – Psalm 46.1

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,
we bring before you all the people across Asia
– in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Sri Lanka –
who have died because of the recent intense storms
hammering their countries.

Receive their souls into your loving embrace,
and comfort their families and friends left behind.

We particularly pray for those in Sri Lanka where ABM AID works.
Send your angels to protect them, and your Spirit to cheer them
and to give them strength for the difficult days ahead.

Give your wisdom to the brave rescue workers
as they strive to reach everyone waiting to be delivered from calamity,
so that they themselves stay safe.

May the authorities coordinate rescue and relief efforts
so that people are helped quickly
and so that the help is what people need.

May your Church be a witness to your compassion and care for all who suffer,
even as its people suffer the effects of the disaster themselves.

May we keep all who have been affected in our prayers
and do all we can to reduce the effects of climate change.

This we ask in your holy Name.

Amen.
