As Australia’s horizon looks brighter after a difficult year, spare a thought for our South East Asian neighbours. Many are still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and now face the onslaught of typhoon season.
People in the Philippines have been hit by several massive typhoons in recent weeks. First came Typhoon Quinta (known locally as Molave) on October 25, 2020. Then typhoon Rolly (Goni) on November 01, 2020. These two typhoons had already displaced around 390,000 people. Then on November 12 came the most destructive typhoon so far. 67 people were killed as Typhoon Ulysses (Vamco) crashed through settlements across Luzon and triggered widespread flooding. It didn’t just sweep away lives. It also swept away homes, crops, livestock and schools.
The suffering is widespread. ABM’s partner the Philippine Independent Church (IFI) has listed 13 dioceses affected by Typhoon Ulysses (Vamco). IFI’s first priority is to address immediate needs: drinking water, food, clothing, hygiene kits, and sleeping mats. ABM’s appeal will support IFI in meeting these needs.
E-CARE, another ABM partner, plans to assist with longer-term post-typhoon rehabilitation work in the new year, so ABM’s appeal will also support this work and we will update you as we get more details over the next few months.
If, during this difficult year, you can spare something to assist those who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods from Typhoon Ulysses, please make a Tax-deductible donation to ABM by clicking the button below.
Prayer for Victims of Typhoon Ulysses (Vamco)
we pray for the people of the Philippines,
particularly those affected by recent devastating typhoons,
for all who have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods.
Fill our hearts with compassion, that our actions may bring some comfort and practical assistance.
Encourage the fearful, give hope to those who have lost everything.
