Vanuatu - Cyclone Harold Emergency Appeal

Wed 08, Apr 2020

Vanuatu Cyclone Emergency AppealWhile people in Vanuatu were already anxious about the threat of COVID-19, they’ve been hit with another disaster: Cyclone Harold.

Cyclone Harold, a category five cyclone with winds of up to 235km/h, ripped through the northern half of Vanuatu on 6 April 2020. On the islands of Espiritu Santo and Malo, the cyclone shredded gardens and reduced many villages to ruins.

Four people lost their lives, and 50-70% of buildings in Vanuatu’s 2nd largest town, Luganville, have been damaged. Flooding is widespread. Communication networks on many islands – like Maewo, Pentecost, Ambae, and Santo – have been disrupted. These areas are a big part of the Anglican heartland in Vanuatu.

ABM’s Vanuatu partner, the Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACOM) has mobilised parish volunteers to conduct neighbourhood clean-ups. ACOM has also completed assessments of damage on the islands of Pentecost, Santo, Malo, Ambae and Aore, and plans to focus on rehabilitating water and sanitation systems.

ABM stands in solidarity with ACOM, and the people of Vanuatu at this difficult time. Together with your support, ABM will be working with ACOM Vanuatu to help in reconstruction and restoration of livelihoods. If you are able to give to our appeal to help the people of Vanuatu, please click the Donate Now button.
Please note that all donations are tax deductible.

Donate Now to the Vanuatu Volcano Emergency

Lord Jesus Christ, even the wind and the sea obey your voice. We pray that you will send your Spirit now to comfort and encourage the people of Vanuatu as they endure the might of Cyclone Harold: houses battered and blown away, food crops destroyed and floods inundating the land. Be with all those who have been able to get to evacuation centres, and help and protect those who are yet to arrive at one. Bless all those who are helping others at this doubly-difficult time. This we ask in your name, who with the Father and that same Spirit live and reign in glory for ever. Amen.

  • ABM advises that there are administrative expenses for receiving and receipting donations for its international appeals. Final costs can only be totalled after the appeal has concluded. However, in previous emergency appeals, ABM contained administrative costs to 10% or less of total funds received.

Gifts/donations to ABM will be applied to the support of project selected. In the unlikely event of this emergency response project being oversubscribed or not proceeding to completion, donations will be directed to ABM's Global Emergency Rapid Response Fund or ABM’s Global Disaster Risk Reduction Fund. These funds are similar in that they enable ABM to provide timely relief during an emergency, and help ABM’s partners to be better able to respond to disasters when they occur.
