Newton Theological College in Papua New Guinea

Curriculum Development

Students at Newton College © Don Brice/ABM 2003

This project needs $31,250 in 2012.

At Newton Theological College, near the coast at Popondetta, students are prepared for a life of service to their communities as leaders of the Church. ABM has supported this project for many years in partnership with the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea (ACPNG) and recognises that the college is the heart of the Church. It is hoped that there will be at least twenty priests graduating every year who will minister effectively within their parishes and communities.

It has been ten years since the curriculum has been reviewed at Newton Theological College (NTC) in Papua New Guinea. The need for this project is urgent.

Curriculum Development will help the Church in PNG by providing standardised teaching and learning tools, which will also improve the standard of learning. It will also bring theological educators together for reflecting, reviewing and developing the curriculum.

Newton College plans to hold a three-month residential learning, teaching and module writing program. In this period, theological educators will produce modules or course books based on the current curriculum of NTC with relevant modifications.

The project will immediately help the students and staff of the College. However, in the long term, it will help the whole of the Anglican Church in PNG because people trained at Newton College work throughout the Province. It will also help the College move into the contemporary areas of Applied Theology.

Newton Theological College is seeking your help to professionalise its teaching and learning program, improve the quality and content of theological education addressing the PNG context, and provide a predictable teaching and learning framework.

ABM continues to support the future leaders in the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea through this project in the hope that they will be able to foster people’s love of God and broaden and extend their understanding of God’s word.
