Kerina Evangelists' College in Papua New Guinea

Students from Kerina Evangelists' College © Brad Chapman/ABM 2007

The Anglican Province of Papua New Guinea is made up of five dioceses – Aipo Rongo, Dogura, New Guinea Islands, Popondota and Port Moresby. Priests are trained at Newton Theological College, just outside Popondetta in Oro Province, and catechists at Kerina Evangelists' College at Tsendiap in Western Highlands Province.

Kerina Evangelists’ College is situated in remote Lower Jimi, an area only accessible by plane. People travel from all over Papua New Guinea to attend the college which provides theological and ministry training for cathechists. Students are trained as evangelists and, after graduation, will work as lay ministers at their local chapels, villages and parishes. Some will remain as unpaid volunteers in their service to the church.

The self reliance project has been implemented to teach basic farming skills. This will provide students and staff with a means of supporting themselves and family members. It is a hard life for all with only meagre allowances for rations, fuel and study materials, and most having to live off produce grown in their own gardens. A Women’s Program will also provide tuition in basic literacy, sewing, nutrition and hygiene so that students’ wives can give support to their husbands in their future ministry work.

The location of the college is challenging indeed but it is there to serve areas outside the usual boundaries. It is hoped that Kerina Evangelists’ College will one day be self-sufficient but in the present, it still relies on funding to purchase teaching supplies, stationary, travel and to cover other running costs.

ABM is grateful to those who are helping our Church Partner, ACPNG, to strengthen and build up the church through their support of leadership training and theological formation in the college.
