Myanmar has a population of more than 50 million and has been under military rule since 1962. Although abundant in natural resources, Myanmar is one of the poorest countries in southeast Asia, with many people, facing poor health, food insecurity, poor hygiene and lack of access to clean water, among other things. The World Bank estimates that approximately one in four households in Myanmar live below the poverty line. Life expectancy is 57 (men) and 63 years (women).
In Myanmar, ABM works through the Anglican Church in the Province of Myanmar (CPM), which promotes partnerships and capacity building within each of the six dioceses with a particular emphasis on water, HIV and AIDS education and small livelihood activities. Parallel to these areas, ABM also continues to look at strengthening the church’s capacity to undertake community development which is focused on poverty reduction.
