Towards Peace in Korea Nutrition Program (TOPIK)

The TOPIK project helps people in North Korea

This project needs $12,000 in 2011.

The Towards Peace in Korea (TOPIK) Nutrition Program began in 2007 after the Worldwide Peace Conference was hosted by the Anglican Church of Korea. This five year humanitarian plan aims to prevent widespread famine within North Korea and at the same time promote peace between the two Koreas.

In 2008, TOPIK’s original objective was to provide pregnant women and children under the age of five with milk and other nutritional supplements. However, the North Korean authorities advised that people were more in need of rice and coal briquette supplies. Since then, 28 tons of rice has been sent to the Onjumg-ri and Gosung areas, with 100,000 briquettes given to Bongdong village and the Kaesung area. In 2009 another 100,000 briquettes were donated to the Gosung area and 8 million 200ml milk packs to Nampo Maternity Hospital.

As well as its humanitarian work, TOPIK plays an active role in helping to build a peace network in East Asia participating in peace conferences, campaigns, and promoting peace amongst the Korean people. Relations between the two Koreas remain difficult and fragile, with the situation further aggravated by political problems, economic downturn, rising food prices and food insecurity.

Today North Korea is still recovering from the effects of the global food crisis and relies on international aid for food supplies. The most vulnerable groups needing help include young children, pregnant and lactating women, and the elderly. The Anglican Church of Korea continues to pray for reunification between north and south, and for an end to the suffering.

The TOPIK Nutrition Program can continue to provide these much needed supplies of food and fuel to the people of North Korea.

What your gift can do:

  • $9.45 pays for seven packs of 500ml pure milk for children and mothers, with one distribution being enough to benefit at least 1,000 children
  • $41.50 pays for a 5kg pack weaning diet for lactating mothers
  • $4,000 will cover one community workshop

Donations to this program are tax deductible.
