Towards Peace in Korea

This project needs $12,000 in 2012.

The Towards Peace in Korea (TOPIK) Nutrition Program began in 2007 after the Worldwide Peace Conference was hosted by the Anglican Church of Korea. This five year humanitarian plan aims to prevent widespread famine within North Korea and at the same time, promote the peaceful reunification of the two Koreas.

Large numbers of people are still suffering from chronic malnutrition and are faced with starvation due to reduced rations in North Korea.

TOPIK believes that real peace can be achieved through forgiveness, full understanding and reconciliation.

Last year they worked with several partners to send 180 tonnes of wheat flour to those in need in the North but the shipment took six months.

TOPIK coordinator, the Rev Joachim Kim said, “TOPIK continues to do the humanitarian sharing movements as God guides us to do. However, it is very regrettable that we sent coal briquettes, shipped rice for emergency and helped the vocational school at Nasun city just once due to the drifting relationship between two Koreas. Nevertheless, TOPIK has tried to make an every effort to send God’s love to the North Korean brothers and sisters. TOPIK would like to express its deep gratitude to the partners and Anglicans around the world, who have been with this course.”

The project is aiming to strengthen humanitarian aid programs to maintain the continuous relationship with North Korean counterparts. One of the main activities at a grassroots level is to offer humanitarian aid and nutrition support to children and the vulnerable.

You can support this project so that ABM can continue to provide financial assistance to TOPIK as it continues this much needed work.

Donations to this program are tax deductible.

A PRAYER FOR THE PEOPLE OF NORTH KOREA AS THEY FACE FAMINE

Give us this day our daily bread.
– Matthew 6:11

We thank you, God who saves,
for the efforts of the National Council of Churches of Korea and its partners
as they seek to respond to the great need of the people in the North
who have endured chronic food shortages and malnutrition for the past fifteen years
and who now face a very poor vegetable crop
due to the heavy rains, floods and severe cold of the past winter season.

Save the people in the North in their time of dearth.

Help the Churches in the South to continue to share their food across the border
with the people of the North,
and let that be an encouragement which impels others to do the same.

May the Churches’ commitment be seen as a demonstration of your love for the world,
a love which crosses every border.

Amen
