Indigenous Secondary Scholarship
St Andrew's Cathedral School, Sydney
This project needs $19,200 in 2012.
Gawura campus at St Andrew’s Cathedral School in Sydney was founded in 2007, after the then principal was inspired by a visit to South Africa. He saw a small group of people setting up classes in more affluent Johannesburg suburbs for the children of Soweto. This “school within a school” grew, and today Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from inner-city suburbs such as Redfern, which has a large Indigenous population, attend a similar school in Sydney.
This project began as a result of a bequest left to ABM for the education of Aboriginal students. Funds raised go directly to the students of Gawura from Kindergarten to Year 12.
St Andrew’s vision for Gawura is “to provide a quality education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in a caring, Christian environment emphasising standards of literacy, numeracy and social skills that are foundations for life.”
The student body is multi-cultural and gives students the opportunity to learn more about different cultures. In Gawura, children come from tribes such as Gadigal and Kamileroi.
