Haiti Earthquake Appeal

17/2/2010

The death toll from the devastating 12 January earthquake in Haiti is now estimated to be above 200,000 (BBC). The search for survivors has officially ended with the main focus on maintaining order and organising aid. Many of the homeless are living in overcrowded makeshift camps.

ABM is sending out emergency funds to Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) who are delivering aid to the survivors and working in partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti. They are also assisting the neighbouring Episcopal Diocese of the Dominican Republic with Haitian refugees who have fled their country.

ERD is continuing to supply much needed food and medical aid, as well as providing training for emergency water purification systems which will be distributed to rural communities. They are also planning how to help Haitians rebuild.

ABM thanks all of you who have given so generously to this appeal, one of the worst natural disasters to happen in recent times, and asks that you keep praying for our brothers and sisters in Haiti, and for our partners.

Read a letter from the Bishop of Haiti, Rt Revd Jean Zaché Duracin, written to Mr Rob Radtke, President of the ERD in New York.

For more information about the work of ERD, visit their website.
