ZIMBABWE – Situation Update
March 24, 2009
“I have never seen my people in such a desperate situation. This year there will be nothing to harvest,” says Sam, an opposition activist. In a country that was once the food bowl of Africa, whose children were among the best educated, amidst the cholera outbreak last year it seemed that things could not be worse. On the 11 of February, The Guardian reported that the only acceptable currency in the country was gold. As food shortages and hunger prevail we fear the worst may be yet to come.
The Anglican Church has responded with determination and compassion to the suffering of Zimbabweans.
On the 19 of February, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York set up an ‘Appeal for Zimbabwe’. Ash Wednesday, 25 of February was a Day of Fasting and Prayer for the whole Anglican Communion. Not only is the Anglican Church outspoken in its opposition to Robert Mugabe, but Lambeth Palace has strong ties to the country through its staff. Donations made to this Appeal through ABM will go directly to the Anglican Communion Office to aid those in Zimbabwe who need it the most.
There is much we can still do to help the people in this country:
- Pray that the people of Zimbabwe will have the strength to endure their suffering while they seek relief
- Pray also that the oppression in Zimbabwe will end and that the people of that country will once again experience abundance
- Over the next twelve months, please give what you can to the Archbishop’s Appeal for Zimbabwe
